In Kimetsu no Yaiba , the Pillars (Hashira) are the first nine swordsmen in the Demon Slayer Order and Gyomei Himejima is one of them. Most of the time Gyomei’s appearance is associated with tears running down his face. In an extra chapter that mentions this, he’s super easy to cry over almost everything. At one point he even started crying because of the mess.

While it doesn’t really explain why Gyomei is always praying and crying, there are things about this Pillar’s past that may to some extent explain his personality.

Gyomei Himejima joined the Demon Slayer and became a Pillar after only two months. But before becoming a Demon Hunter, Gyomei raised orphans in a temple. There are a total of nine orphans who are well cared for by Gyomei. They were all living happily until the day a demon ruined their happy lives.

The demon took the lives of most of the children, only one survived because Gyomei defeated the demon with his bare hands. He could have saved most of the children if they had only believed in him and hid behind his back during the demon attack. Unfortunately, the children run away to seek help, thinking that Gyomei will need help because he is blind.

Then, good to thank Gyomei for defeating the demon, the villagers sentenced him to death because they misunderstood the situation. The words of the child who survived caused everyone to misunderstand the blind man. Something like “He killed them. He killed them all (referring to the demon)”, but the others thought the kid was talking about Gyomei.

Even then, Gyomei couldn’t say anything to protect himself, as his preoccupation was not being able to protect the children the demon had murdered.

Fortunately, Kagaya Ubayashiki saw something in Gyomei and recruited him as a Demon Hunter. Gyomei then dedicated his life to protecting humanity and he became a Pillar after only 2 months.

The reason why Gyomei Himejima is always crying and praying may be related to trauma from his past. What do you think about this? Please share your thoughts!
