Kogoro Mouri’s Background
Kogoro Mouri is a private detective, but he likes to be around his office all day unless the client is a beautiful woman. Kogoro attended Teitan High School (the same high school as his daughters Ran Mouri and Shinichi Kudo), along with Eri Kisaki (wife), Yukiko Fujimine, and actress Ruri Ujo. He later graduated from Beika University, becoming one of the good members of the Judo team, although he is easily frightened on stage.
Some time after graduation, Kogoro becomes a police officer, working at the Tokyo police station with Inspector Megure (Juzo Megure). However, he was not a good investigator. According to Ninzaburo Shiratori in Movie 2, the duo is famous for how they catch criminals. He also worked under the command of Inspector Yuminaga (Inspector Yuminaga).
While Movie 2 mentions that Kogoro left the police force because he shot his wife, Eri Kisaki, a bullet in the leg to save her from a threatened situation, however, this reason has not yet been given. Author confirmed in the story. Around the time Kogoro left the police force, Eri also left, they were never officially divorced even though ten years had passed. Their daughter, Ran, always tries to bring them together, but she has not been successful.
Despite always pretending not to care about his wife, Kogoro still has feelings for Eri. He even asked her to come back, but at that time, she pretended not to listen because she was not ready, despite still having feelings for her husband. These are shown mainly through jealousy when Kogoro’s attention is caught by other attractive women nearby.
After Shinichi was reduced to Conan Edogawa, Hiroshi Agasa concluded that Shinichi could not continue investigating the Black Organization because it would be too dangerous. To maintain the secret, Agasa suggested that Shinichi move to Kogoro’s house and continue the investigation, so it would be safer. In several cases, Conan made Kogoro faint with anesthetic needles and used the Voice Changer Bow to imitate Kogoro’s voice, drawing conclusions about the killer. So Kogoro received the title of Sleeping Kogoro and became a master detective.
Personality of Kogoro Mouri

Kogoro has doubts but still does not investigate why he is constantly able to solve the case in his sleep even though when awake he makes all the wrong deductions. Kogoro has an unprofessional way of working, often making sarcastic and brusque comments about suspects or even his own clients. In cases, Kogoro often omits important data, he is often silly, so he often falls directly into the trap of criminals.
Inspector Megure usually considers him a trouble while awake and hopes to see Doze Kogoro as soon as possible. Kogoro is only really serious when the case is of personal importance (such as the case about Eri or Ran). In such cases, his attitude and personality completely changed and became professional, showing more deductive skills than usual. Although he’s not as good as Shinichi and he can still have trouble finding clues, it makes his deductions more logical, and Kogoro often proves he has a connection. personal system better than Shinichi.
Mouri Kogoro is easily charmed by beautiful women. Especially pop idol Yoko Okino, and he never misses (or tries not to miss) her TV shows. He also keeps a large collection of Yoko-related items and gifts, and his study and bedroom feature Yoko posters. The flirting around attractive women became one of the main reasons why Eri Kisaki didn’t want to come back.
In the anime, especially in the early episodes, the office is littered with empty beer cans, and he has a dedicated shelf to store alcohol. Kogoro is also a heavy smoker, and is often seen with a cigarette in his mouth. Other hobbies include watching his favorite idol star, Yoko Okino, betting on horse racing, playing mahjong (which he often loses), playing or watching baseball (he plays on the neighborhood team) .
In the Movie, Kogoro suffers from mild phobia (fear of heights) and shows discomfort in high places. For a long time, this was not mentioned in the manga, although it appeared in some promotional episodes. Kogoro’s fear of heights was finally confirmed into the main storyline.
Kogoro Mouri’s Appearance
Kogoro is a rather tall man. He has high eyebrows, a short mustache, and short black hair. The hair always has two loose strands of hair hanging from the forehead. Ten years ago, when Kogoro was still in the police force, he was clean shaven. In cases, Kogoro usually wears a blue or gray suit and tie, and sometimes just a collared shirt. If he drank a lot of alcohol, he would tie his tie around his head like a rope. Kogoro is right-handed. Kogoro also smokes, although in the storyline he is gradually depicted smoking less often.
Kogoro Mouri’s Skills

For most of the series, Kogoro is portrayed as an incompetent (or simply lazy) detective who often lacks clues and comes to the wrong conclusions, although some of these conclusions are taken. by others at the scene. However, Kogoro followed the proper police procedure of asking questions and (with Conan’s help) following quite well. Although he was fired (he was once a police officer under Inspector Megure). He left the police force after the events mentioned in Movie 2 – 14th Target.
Thanks to Conan’s secret aid in solving many cases, Kogoro’s reputation as a detective grows rapidly. He barely remembers the resolution of any of the cases because Conan shot him with an anesthetic needle before he started solving the case. However, Kogoro never seems to wonder about this and is often proud of his success. After that, he was nicknamed Sleeping Kogoro by everyone. Jugo Yokomizo often mistakenly calls him Smooker Kogoro because of his smoking habit. Most of the places he (or rather, Conan) go are crime scenes, so Inspector Megure likens Kogoro to a god of death.
In many stories, Kogoro demonstrates his ability to solve cases without Conan’s help, especially when people he knows or cares about are involved. It seems that, while he can connect the data well, he cannot find them as quickly as Conan. The first incident occurred during a trip to a hot spring, where one of his former classmates was killed.
Kogoro is truly stunned and determined to find the killer on his own that Conan can’t shoot the anesthetic needle by working independently to pay attention to the necessary clues. Although the analysis is often wrong, Kogoro is actually quite intelligent. He was even able to completely solve a case on his own in Movie 9 – The Sea Conspiracy, as the culprit was Minako who resembled Eri (his wife).
Kogoro is an expert in Judo. He joined the Judo team at Beika University. His trademark stance is Ippon seoi-nage (one-handed throwing), which he often uses to catch suspects. He can be seen as a capable teacher, having taught both Eri and Ran.
In episode 11, chapter 2, and in episode 31, Kogoro states that although he is a former police officer, he is not skilled in using a gun. Meanwhile, in Movie 2, Kogoro has a great shooting scene with a shotgun, which can hit targets at great distances with impressive accuracy. However, Aoyama stated in Super Digest Book 40+ that Kogoro’s excellent shooting skills from Movie 2 have officially been incorporated into the main plot.
